Vacation Hangover.

It’s been 5 days since I got back from Cape Cod, and I still have a vacation hangover. While I am trying to get back on track, let me tell you, it has not been easy. Symptoms of my vacation hangover include, but are not limited to, being hungry, lazy, sleepy, and not on my game this week. (Side note: vacation pictures coming this weekend, see symptom #3 of lazy for explanation.)

I could get mad at myself for not being 100% healthy this week like I planned or I could just let it all go to hell, but instead, I am trying to give myself a break. What I realized is, is that vacation hangover is a very serious thing. Okay, not that serious, but serious enough that when I googled it, I found out that I am not even the person to originally coin the term. (And just when I thought I was pretty clever too…)

So even though I have had wine + beer this week twice, only cheese + bread for dinner one night, and a several handfuls of M&Ms this afternoon for a snack, I have also eaten a healthy breakfast everyday this week (well, the egg white flat bread from DD was questionable but…), worked out twice, (which means I skipped yesterday’s workout but I’ll make up for it on Friday,) and have not been hiding in my bed crying to go back to the Cape at all this week. So all in all, not too bad.

I think I will instate a new post-vacation-week-transition-week-rule (does that even make sense?)  that as long as my healthy choices are approximately at 50-50, then I am a-okay for the week.

It’s all about balance right? And it’s definitely about not beating yourself up over decisions that you make when you are not 100%. So like any transitional period, you just got to do the best you can, live life to the fullest and have a Coconut Iced Coffee here + there, and you will be a-okay.

Today I got to work late. It may have had something to do with the fact that my boss pulled me out of work yesterday at 3:00pm to join him and some colleagues at the bar down the street. This led to several beers + me inviting myself over to my friend’s house for dinner afterwards tempting them with a bottle of wine. Who do I think I am? A 21 year old sorority girl again? Nope. Dinner was delicious though. Homemade broccoli and beef, with cheese and fruit as an appetizer. I have good cooks friends, what can I say? (No pictures, too many of said beers to remember to do such a thing. It’s all about being honest here, right? Right?)

Driving to work today all I wanted was a big bagel with cream cheese. But I knew that what I really needed was some Greek yogurt, fruit, granola + chia seeds. I tried to make it pretty, to make me want it as much as that bagel. That didn’t work exactly as it’s not an exact science, but it was tasty and made me feel better (along with the Advil.)

By lunch I was starving, this happens when I have both vacation hangovers + real hangovers, so I knew what needed to be done. I headed to Potbelly to get my sandwich on.

I had a multi-grain sandwich thin with roast beef, cheddar cheese, lots of veggies + a little oil and Italian seasoning, with a small side of coleslaw (I saw it and had to eat it. Strange but true.)

Want to know another strange thing? I only like tomatoes sometimes. Today, I decided I don’t like them. Who knows if I will tomorrow. We shall see.

Do you ever give yourself a transition period after a vacation? Why or why not?

If you could vacation anywhere, right now, where would you go? I’d go to Bora Bora. 🙂

Yesterday after work I headed to Happy Hour with a couple coworkers at a local bar near my work. I was planning on having a drink or two and heading home, but after a couple of beers and a growling stomach, I was convinced to go dinner at Trattoria Alberto in Barrack’s Row in DC with my friend Sean.

Magic Hat No 9, don't mind if I do.

I have been to Trattoria Alberto once before, and it was delicious so I was excited to go ago. The restaurant has been around for 25 years and is a hidden gem in my opinion. There are hundreds of Italian restaurants in this area, but this one is 100% Italian deliciousness.

We started with a bottle of Chianti. Even though its been super hot here in DC, Italian food is just better with a nice bottle of red.

The wine was perfect. A little dry, but a little sweet. Perfect for an Italian evening. For an appetizer, we decided to order an Antipasto Salad for Two. My picture turned out blurry, but it was huge! Romaine lettuce topped with meets, cheeses and sardines with a tasty, garlicky, olive oil based dressing on the side. I made myself a small plate and then picked a little at it more while I waited for my entree to come.

Sean got a veal dish, but I decided to go with the Seafood Pasta special. Again, it was huge.

A little linguine topped with mussels, scallops, calamari, shrimp and lobster in a white wine sauce. Holy delizioso! It was amazing. I probably ate about a third of it, and sent the rest home with Sean but my oh my was it good.

Want to know something crazy? I had never had lobster before. For a very long time, I thought I was allergic to it, but I recently found out that I am not, so this was my first taste. I was planning on waiting until I go to Cape Cod in a few weeks for vacation, but when the Seafood Pasta showed up in front of me, I knew right then and there was the perfect time to try (I had no idea it would be in the dish!)

We both agreed that we might as well go all out and share a little dessert, so we ordered the tiramisu. Also excellant.

I had a small cappuccino on the side, (have I mentioned my love for foam yet?) and was basically in a state of pure food bliss. My meal was definitely a splurge, but it was definitely worth it. It’s all about balance, right? Well, this girl loves food, so once in a while, expect to see a decadent meal on here, because let me tell you, they are worth it.

Our waiter sent over a limoncello aperitif that I had a single sip of. It was quite strong! But fun nonetheless.

Overall, it was an awesome meal and a great experience… although I did have a smell headache this morning. Happy Saturday!

This week was longgg. Probably something to do with the fact that the last few weeks I haven’t had to work the full 5 days between the 4th of July and my toe surgery, but I am thanking my lucky stars that it is finally the weekend. Work has been hec-tic, so I am looking forward to a little relaxation and rejuvenation this weekend. (Read: POOL time.)

Yesterday after my delicious cake lunch, I did some work, and eventually nibbled on some fruit and a Lara Bar.

Peach, plum...

I had not tried Cinnamon Roll before, and it was pretty tasty! I love Larabars, and I find myself either in the mood for a Lara or a Luna but never both at the same time.

I headed home after work and started dinner. I had chicken and zucchini to work with, and since I was not about to go outside and grill in the 100 degree heat, I decided to Google ‘chicken and zucchini recipes’ to see what I could find.

I found a recipe on Real Simple that looked both easy to make and really tasty: Feta Chicken with Zucchini. I added some fresh garlic to the recipe and since I didn’t have fresh parsley I used a mix of dried parsley, thyme and tarragon. I used Fat Free Feta (since it was all I had) and topped the dish with a little fresh, grated parmesan on top. It was the perfect, light, lemony, summer dish. I will definitely make this one-dish meal again.

After dinner I went on a nice, hour long walk, with a big bottle of water. It was still HOT out but I figure a walk wouldn’t kill me, especially since I went prepared. So glad I brought that water, it was needed! I came back as sweaty as I would have if I ran on a normal temperature day out.

This morning I woke up late, (I turned off my alarm in my sleep 😦 ) so no strength training this AM. Probably a good thing because I somehow developed this huge blister on my bad toe which needed to be taken care of. Ouch. My toe must have told my mind to shut the alarm off, right?

I rushed to get ready, and thankfully had time to eat a good breakfast.

It was way too much, but it was delicious. 1 cup cereal (2 kashis), blueberries, strawberries, 1/2 banana, chia seeds, and Greek yogurt. Perfect way to begin my Friday!

For lunch a few co-workers and I decided to go to freshii for lunch to get some big salads. I can’t really think of anything else I would have wanted for lunch on such a hot day! (It even looks hot outside!)

I made my own BBQ-esque salad with BBQ chicken (of the BBQ variety of course,) avocado, black beans, mushrooms, onions, cucumber, carrots, and some other fun stuff. It was perfect! Totally satisfying.

I am off to grab a drink with some co-workers and then will probably just head home for the night. We shall see. TGIF everyone!

Oh the insanity.

This morning I woke up bright and early and did Stage 1 Workout A of NROLFW. What’s that you say? I was suppose to do it yesterday. Oh yes, you would be right. But I in fact did not do it yesterday because yesterday I decided to play hooky and go to Happy Hour with a coworker. Sometimes you just need to let loose, and after yesterday at work, I sure did!

Let’s back things up shall we?

Yesterday’s Breakfast

Oats, flax seed, chia seeds, half a banana, blueberries plus milk.

I’m obsessed with blueberries right now. They are so sweet and tangy! Yum, yum, yum!

Yesterday’s Lunch

What is this you ask? Baked shell filling (from Sunday’s dinner) + broccoli. Wasn’t feeling the actual shells 🙂 So I heated it up and mixed it all together…

Yes it looks somewhat gross, but in actuality it was pretty darn good!

Lunch was rounded out with a plum on the side.

Yesterday’s Afternoon Snack

Apple & PB. ‘Nuff said.

Yesterday’s Dinner

Now this is where things get tricky, and by tricky, I mean for real gross! As I said, after work I went to Happy Hour with a co-worker. I had one three of these…

Miller light… plus a small piece basil cheese. (Yes, it’s as good as it sounds for the record.)

Yes, this may be the worst picture ever. But you get the point...

By the time I got home around 9:30 I was STARVING. I poked my head in the freezer, saw my roommate’s Lean Pocket (chicken, mushroom + wild rice) and dug in. (After asking permission of course.)

Gross, gross, gross, Jane!

Oh the insanity. Why did I eat this. It made me feel awful! I have not had processed foods in so long at this level. I went to bed with a stomach ache. It could have been worse I suppose, and it could have been a Hot Pocket! 😉

I pledged to get up workout and have a good, healthy day to make up for it! (And to say sorry to my tummy!) So far, so good. As I said, I got up did my strength training. Overall the first day was pretty good.

Stage 1, Workout A includes:

  • Squats with Barbell –> Started at 10lbs on each side plus the bar! I definitely felt it!
  • Push-ups –> Did these “lady” style (aka on my knees) since I definitely cannot be on my toe!
  • Seated row –> I think 35lbs but I have to check…. yes, I am a weight newbie!
  • Step-ups with weights
  • Prone Jack Knife –> I did regular sit-ups this time since I think it may have been hard on my toe.
It went by quick! Two reps of each exercise and then you are done! I can definitely do this plus a walk (or run when I get the doc’s a-okay!) and it will be a good workout! Or I can divide up for a short, quick AM workout. I love that!
Breakfast this morning was more oats! Chocolate protein PB oats to be exact.

  • Oats
  • 1/2 tbsp flax seed
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tbsp(ish) dark chocolate PB
  • blueberries
  • FF milk
Oats normally leave me full, but this left me FULL in a good way. I’ve been good all morning, no grumblings in my stomach. My tummy is definitely happier with me!
I’m off to Whole Foods in a bit for a trip to their awesome salad bar for lunch and to pick up some more blueberries (and who knows what else!) because I ran out this morning and this is not okay in my blueberry loving book.
Happy Hump Day! 😀
