Oh what a weekend.

Well, I was a pretty bad blogger this weekend, wasn’t I? Let’s just say, I went on a staycation. On Friday night I headed out to my friend’s birthday party and I did not get back until Sunday. No, no nothing¬†scandalous. Just spent the weekend hanging out with friends and instead of heading home just crashed at a friend’s house in the city. Sometimes its nice to just get out of the house and relax, especially after a crazy week at work. I will not bore you with a weekend of food posts, but just know it involved good ol’ fashion BBQs, sandwiches, and a big bowl of cereal on Sunday night. Oh and maybe a few of these.

I also watched a lot of movies and TV shows. Mad Men has become a real problem. There are four seasons on Netflix, and I have this small problem that once I start a TV show, I cannot stop watching it. Check it out. You will be hooked too. ūüėČ

Overall I can honestly say that despite the ‘having more beers that I probably should have’ I didn’t eat too crazy this weekend. I tried to have small portions of all the good stuff, and big portions of veggies (grilled¬†zucchini¬†anyone?) and fruits (how good are¬†mangoes¬†right now?!)

Monday morning came hard and it came fast though. Luckily I had a 9am appointment at an office about 10 minutes from mi casa, so I got to sleep in a little later than normal. Every minute counts, especially on Mondays!

I woke up and started my day with something I knew would kick my week off to a good start. Two whole wheat waffles, two peanut butters (dark and white chocolate of course,) half a banana and chia seeds (my new secret weapon to hydration. Seriously, if I start the day of with chias, I feel more hydrated throughout the day. True story.) I had it with a nice glass of iced tea on the side.

I go through kicks where I like iced tea better than iced coffee, make that hot tea and hot coffee as well. I am definitely on an iced tea kick. Brewing it at home and adding a splash of Crystal Light lemonade to it. So refreshing.

Work was crazy as usual today. But I am beginning to feel more confident that the date in my head is going to happen and that gives me hope that I just finish up what I am doing and move on my merry way out West. I think the staycation helped my positive thinking, which is excellent news in my book.

Lunch came around and since I played hooky all weekend I decided to go to the grocery store and kill two birds with once stone: grab lunch and something for dinner. I picked up some supplies for grilled chicken salad for dinner and headed to the deli counter for a panini. When in doubt, grocery stores usually have great sandwiches, and this one did not fail me. I ended up ordering the Turkey Reuben Panini and a small Broccoli Salad.

Can you believe that is only half of both! I have lunch waiting for me in the fridge at work tomorrow. The broc salad was crunchy and delish. Just a light dressing on top. And the panini was great. Not too much dressing on this either.

Lunch left me feeling satisfied all afternoon until these two little guys showed up on my desk. It was a fun little treat, not going to lie.

Have I mentioned that I love dark chocolate? Even more than milk chocolate. True story.

I headed home from work around 5:30 and chatted with my sister while driving home. I am getting so excited about Cape Cod. We chatted about day trips, beach trips, and most importantly, food!

I got home and got on the treadmill. The doctor cleared me to begin running again as of yesterday, so I was excited to get a run in. I wanted to take it slow and easy since it was my first run in almost 3 weeks! I decided to do a half hour on the treadmill alternating between 2:30 of running (@5.5) and walking (@4.0.) The run/walk combo really worked up a sweat and was a great intro back (2.25 miles.).

I really need to figure out more of a game plan for my running. I think I have a plan, but want to do a little more research before putting anything out there. Any tips for newbie runners like myself? What makes me the most excited is that I was excited to get a run in today, and I am excited to make a plan and to take it day by day until I am (hopefully) running a marathon! Baby steps though baby steps ūüôā

I also did Workout B of Stage 1 of NROLFW. This is now my forth time doing it and I am already feeling stronger… if that is even possible. Cardio + strength left me feeling 100% good.

Dinner was of course a grilled chicken salad. Quick, easy, but oh so good. Fresh red leaf romaine, grilled chicken (courtesy of my Mean Lean Grilling Machine,) cucumbers, strawberries (my new salad favorite,) red onion, carrots, a little feta and some low-fat Greek dressing. Perfect dinner after a good workout.

After dinner I turned on the Bachelorette (even though I hadn’t seen a single episode all season) and got hooked for approximately 2 hours and 7,000 awkward moments. I couldn’t stop watching, it sucked me!

I also caught up on blogs though (multi-tasker right here,) and am now in bed ready to turn on a Mad Men and go to sleep!

Hope you all had exactly the weekend you needed, and hope you all have a good week lined up!

Jinx. You owe me a cocktail.

I said this today, and then I totally jinxed myself.

I am pretty sure as soon as I said that, boom, work got crazy! On a Friday afternoon. Why, oh why? The good news is, its still Friday. It’s still the weekend. And my new favorite thing to do is leave my work at the door and focus on relaxing and having fun!

Yesterday was fun too. I woke up and had a fun, new breakfast combo. Cottage cheese, crumbled low-fat muffin (that the roomie had baked) and fruit! It was so good I had it today too.

Thursday's Breakfast

Today's Breakfast

Banana’s today, strawberries yesterday. All so good. It was like breakfast cake. No complaints there.

Lunch yesterday and today were both really good as well. I need to stop going out to lunch and bring my food more, but yesterday I at least got lunch on a co-worker.

Thursday's Lunch: Vietnamese Vermicelli Bowl with Summer rolls instead of Spring rolls.

Friday's Lunch: Half a Tuna Garden Salad Wrap plus a small bag of BBQ Pop Chips (not pictured.)

I got home from work and headed strait to the gym to do another NROLFW session. They are short workouts but I was in a rush because I was suppose to go out for my friend’s birthday. She had also had to move that day, so she ended up just wanting to stay in. Since the roommate and I had planned on going out for this, we ended up just going and getting dinner and a cocktail before heading to her new¬†apartment.

We ended up going to Circa in Clarendon. I had been there once before for appetizers and drinks only so I was excited to try some more of their food because the apps were delicious.

I started with a Watermelon Cooler (crushed watermelon, rum and lime) and my roomie got a¬†Pomegranate¬†Martini. My drink was the hand’s down winner. It may have been the best cocktail I have ever had. And I do not say that from lack of experience.

If you live in the DMV area you must go try this cocktail. So good and refreshing. For dinner I ordered a Salmon Spinach salad, which was great too. The salmon was perfectly cooked. Overcooked salmon is such a faux pas.

Salmon, spinach, goat cheese, cranberries, red onions + balsamic.

After dinner we were walking back to the car and a new cupcakery was passing out freebies. Yes, free cupcakes! We told the clerk it was our friends birthday and we were able to get 4 for free which we brought back to the birthday girl’s apartment.

Yes, that is my lap, don't judge.

We said happy birthday and enjoyed our cupcakes with a glass of champagne. Sometimes simple birthday celebrations are the best in my book.

I am now sitting drinking a Magic Hat Vinyl Lager that has been in my¬†refrigerator¬†since February (classy) and eating some Amy’s Pizza. I feel like I have drank more than I normally do this week, but I guess it’s just that kind of week.

Amy's Pesto pizza + leftover chicken + mushrooms on top.

I am off to yet another birthday party, this time for a coworker, so I will be back tomorrow. Happy weekend!!

My oh my, where has the day gone? Today has been super crazy at work! This is the first second I have had to myself! I woke up this morning LATE! I mean super late. Have to leave in 10 minutes late. Luckily I had showered the night before, so I threw some clothes on, threw some food in a bag and headed out the door.

But I am getting ahead of myself, aren’t I. Let’s talk about Sunday. Oh Sunday, how I miss you so much. I love Sundays. I usually don’t try to plan much on Sundays, I usually just go with the flow. I love waking up in the morning, making a simple, tasty breakfast and try to just lounge around for a bit before deciding on my ‘to dos’ for the day.

I decided on a Whole Wheat English Muffin with White Chocolate Peanut Butter + Chia seeds, with berries on the side. Easy yet delicious. A great combo in my book.

I relaxed on the couch for a while, and decided to start some laundry, and clean up around the apartment a bit. Around noon my roommate and I headed out to run errands – on the agenda lunch, Target, grocery store + Trader Joe’s! We decided to get in all in at once so we could get it over with.

Lunch was at Einstein Bagel’s. I got a BLT with Avocado on a Bagel Thin with Turkey Bacon instead of regular. (Picture = too blurry to post.) It was okay. The guy making it forgot the sun dried tomato spread so it was a bit bland. C’est la vie. I got a Iced Skinny Vanilla Latte from Starbucks to make up for my bland sammie and to get a little caffeine in before our massive shopping trip.

After running around like mad women, we headed back to apartment to organize our goodies. Just basics and groceries, but all needed! I snacked on a Luna Bar and a small piece of Port Salute cheese (one of my favorites) and let it digest a bit before heading the gym to finally do Stage 1 Workout B of NROLFW.

NROLFW Stage 1 Workout B consists of 5 strength exercises:

  • Dead lift¬†(2 x 15 reps @ 40lbs – you are suppose to use a barbell, but my gym does not have one that is not attached to a machine, so I used two 20lb weights)
  • Dumbbell¬†Shoulder Press (2 x 15 reps @ 10lbs each hand)
  • Wide-grip lat pull down (2 x 15 reps @ 50lbs)
  • Lunge (2 x 15 reps @ 10lbs in each hand – 20lbs total)
  • Swiss ball crunch ( 2 x 8 reps – I did 15 reps each time on accident.)
Its a short, compact workout, but I sure am feeling it today. Which in Jane terms means it must be working… right?!
After my workout it was a bit early but I decided to start dinner. I sauteed up asparagus, mushrooms, peppers, onions + garlic plus lots of spices and a little olive oil in a pan and added in some garlic chicken + Gruyere sausage. I boiled some whole wheat rotini and mixed it all together calling it a quick and easy dinner.
I think I subconsciously made dinner quite early because I had been craving FroYo all week. SO many bloggers out there talking about how good its been, and I just discovered a shop by me that I have been wanting to try. Early dinner means more dessert, right?!
The roommate and I headed to Yogiberry which is located in Shirlington. It’s almost as good as Yogurtland, but not quite! I decided to get a mix of Cake Batter and Oreo with a lot of fruit on top + a bit of almond slivers and mini chips.
It hit the spot. So good! I don’t think I have had froyo in about a year (I know) so I was happy to have it in my belly again ūüôā
Thank goodness Sunday was so great, because we are back to Monday now, and today has been a real kick in the butt! Lots of work, lots of meetings, and lots of realizing that I need to start upping my employment applications so I can get to the West Coast ASAP.
This post is long enough, so I’ll be back later with today’s eats. I’m heading home to get a workout in (T-3 days till I know if I can start running again!)
Do you like froyo? What’s your favorite combo?
I personally LOVE getting Reese’s PB Cups on top, but they didn’t have any last night! Probably a good thing ūüėČ

Oh the insanity.

This morning I woke up bright and early and did Stage 1 Workout A of NROLFW. What’s that you say? I was suppose to do it yesterday. Oh yes, you would be right. But I in fact did not do it yesterday because yesterday I decided to play hooky and go to Happy Hour with a coworker. Sometimes you just need to let loose, and after yesterday at work, I sure did!

Let’s back things up shall we?

Yesterday’s Breakfast

Oats, flax seed, chia seeds, half a banana, blueberries plus milk.

I’m obsessed with blueberries right now. They are so sweet and tangy! Yum, yum, yum!

Yesterday’s Lunch

What is this you ask? Baked shell filling (from Sunday’s dinner) + broccoli. Wasn’t feeling the actual shells ūüôā So I heated it up and mixed it all together…

Yes it looks somewhat gross, but in actuality it was pretty darn good!

Lunch was rounded out with a plum on the side.

Yesterday’s Afternoon Snack

Apple & PB. ‘Nuff said.

Yesterday’s Dinner

Now this is where things get tricky, and by tricky, I mean for real gross! As I said, after work I went to Happy Hour with a co-worker. I had one three of these…

Miller light… plus a small piece basil cheese. (Yes, it’s as good as it sounds for the record.)

Yes, this may be the worst picture ever. But you get the point...

By the time I got home around 9:30 I was STARVING. I poked my head in the freezer, saw my¬†roommate’s¬†Lean Pocket (chicken, mushroom + wild rice) and dug in. (After asking permission of course.)

Gross, gross, gross, Jane!

Oh the insanity. Why did I eat this. It made me feel awful! I have not had processed foods in so long at this level. I went to bed with a stomach ache. It could have been worse I suppose, and it could have been a Hot Pocket! ūüėČ

I pledged to get up workout and have a good, healthy day to make up for it! (And to say sorry to my tummy!) So far, so good. As I said, I got up did my strength training. Overall the first day was pretty good.

Stage 1, Workout A includes:

  • Squats with Barbell –> Started at 10lbs on each side plus the bar! I¬†definitely¬†felt it!
  • Push-ups –> Did these “lady” style (aka on my knees) since I definitely cannot be on my toe!
  • Seated row –> I think 35lbs but I have to check…. yes, I am a weight newbie!
  • Step-ups with weights
  • Prone Jack Knife –> I did regular¬†sit-ups¬†this time since I think it may have been hard on my toe.
It went by quick! Two reps of each¬†exercise¬†and then you are done! I can definitely do this plus a walk (or run when I get the doc’s a-okay!) and it will be a good workout! Or I can divide up for a short, quick AM workout. I love that!
Breakfast this morning was more oats! Chocolate protein PB oats to be exact.

  • Oats
  • 1/2 tbsp flax seed
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tbsp(ish) dark chocolate PB
  • blueberries
  • FF milk
Oats normally leave me full, but this left me FULL in a good way. I’ve been good all morning, no grumblings in my stomach. My tummy is definitely happier with me!
I’m off to Whole Foods in a bit for a trip to their awesome salad bar for lunch and to pick up some more blueberries (and who knows what else!) because I ran out this morning and this is not okay in my blueberry loving book.
Happy Hump Day! ūüėÄ

New Plan.

With my toe leaving me benched so-to-speak with my running, I obviously need a new plan. Two weeks of no running means I have no excuse not to start a strength training program, so I am glad that I ordered The New Rules of Lifting for Women book a few weeks ago. I have only read some of it, and plan on reading more tonight, but basically its a 6-month strength training plan, that you do 3-days a week, so it will keep me busy for a while! I’ll review as I go ūüôā

I plan on walking and doing strength training over the next two weeks while my toe heals up to keep me on track fitness wise. This week’s fitness schedule includes:

60 minute walk

NROLFW Stage 1 Workout A

60 minute walk

NROLFW Stage 1 Workout B

60 minute walk

60 minute walk
NROLFW Stage 1 Workout A

5 mile “easy” hike

Hopefully my toe will hold up okay. The walks will only be as fast as I can go. No pre-set miles, just nice long walks to help stretch my toe and keep the blood flowing! The hike on Sunday is with some friends, and they assure me its an easy path and very pretty, so I am excited! I love hiking!

For breakfast this morning I was running late! My alarm went off at 7:00 and I turned it off, and then promptly fell back asleep. I woke up at 8:00 and had 30 minutes to get out the door! I grabbed some breakfast essentials, cereal, fruit, chia seeds, and knew I had a container of Greek yogurt at work and a Kashi Frozen meal in the freezer that I had been meaning to try, and ran out the door. Luckily I had showered the night before, or I would have been late, late, late!

When I got to work I was starving since I normally eat breakfast around 7:15 and it was now 9:00 so I threw my breakfast together quickly and chowed down. It hit the spot. Normally I use milk with my cereal but the Greek yogurt was really good!

In the mix:

  • 1/2 serving Kashi Cinnamon Harvest
  • 1/2 cup Kashi Go Lean Crunch
  • 5 oz non-fat Greek yogurt (Honey Flavored)
  • blueberries
  • banana
  • chia seeds

all mixed up

Blueberries are so good right now. Perfectly plump and sweet. Breakfast left satisfied and content until almost 1:00pm when I decided I should eat some lunch. I’ve had this frozen Kashi meal (theme of the day?) in my work’s freezer for a while in case I forgot my lunch or was too busy to run out for something. Well, today I was just being stubborn, so I decided to try it.

I know it doesn’t look that appetizing in this photo, but it was actually pretty good for a frozen meal! Lots of spinach, and the chicken didn’t taste like plastic which is always a good thing in my book ūüôā Plus, it left me full! I was planning on having a piece of fruit on the side, but I just couldn’t do it! I’ll save the fruit for later! No problem there!

My toe seems better today as well. I’ve been keeping it nice and bandaged, but think tonight I will let it ‘air out’ for a while after my walk and shower. I feel good now that I have made a new plan and know exactly what I will be doing for the next few days while I recover.

Hope you are all having a wonderful Monday!
