Overnight OIAJ.

Yesterday’s breakfast was a first here at Broccolini + Cheese, yesterday I had my first, ever Overnight Oats! While I had OIAJ once before, this is the first time I let them sit overnight which, in my first timer’s opinion, really makes all the difference.

The night before I added:

  • 5 oz FF Honey Greek Yogurt
  • 1/2 cup FF milk
  • (almost) 1/2 cup Oats
  • Blueberries
  • Half a banana
  • 1/2 tbsp Flax Seed
  • 1/2 tbsp Chia Seed
  • Last bit of (not-so-great) PB
Wow, was this good! I added a little TJ Low Fat Vanilla Almond Granola on top for a bit of a crunch since I didn’t really know what to expect or if I’d enjoy the cold oats, but it was so good. The flavors all mixed together and I was left full and satisfied all morning long. 
Around lunchtime I realized that the lunch I had brought in on Friday of last week that I was playing on eating was not looking smelling too good. My office doesn’t really have that many options that are super convenient to get to, park at, etc, so I ended up going to Subway. I felt like I was just there, but I suppose this was a lunch sandwich and last time I got a breakfast sandwich so its totally different… right? 😉
The last lady I had at Subway was quite stingy with her vegetables, so i was glad this lady packed them in there. I had turkey, pepper jack, and lots of veggies including a scoop of avocado with a little oil and vinegar on top.
As I have mentioned, and not to be a Debbie Downer, but work has been insane on so many levels lately. So when I got back from lunch and saw someone had made cupcakes, I figured why not.
There weren’t too big, but it definitely was a small little perk for my day. (As are my pink post-it notes that I was nice enough to share with the cupcake.) A little while later into the afternoon, my sweet tooth was back, as it always is after I have sweets, so I cut myself up some mango to battle my sweet too with fruit! This mango was awesome, in fact, dare I say better than the cupacke. I ate it before snapping up a photo, but have more so I’ll be sure to share what kind they are, because it was have been the best mango I’ve ever had. (Bold statement right there, people.)
I got home from work and headed down to the gym and hopped on the elliptical to see how my toe would handle it. It’s been almost 2 weeks since the surgery, and while the doc said no running until he cleared me, (possibly tomorrow,) I decided the elliptical would be okay.  Call me crazy, but I just do not like the elliptical. It is really boring in my book! I stayed on for just over 20 minutes until my toe started to burn. At this point, I think its more the sweat going into the wound the the toe itself, but I suppose I will know more tomorrow. I did some floor work, stretches and abs, before calling it quits for the night.
For dinner I made a new recipe by roommate found in Fitness Magazine: Corn and Quinoa Salad with Chicken Sausage.
It turned out really well. The salad consists of quinoa, corn, zucchini, yellow squash, red bell pepper and onion with a lemon, EVOO dressing. You are suppose to put cumin in it, but I didn’t have any so I just added a few extra spices in there (think oregano, thyme, etc) and it was delicious. Very summery and fresh tasting.
After a long day at work, I definitely need one two of these as well.
After dinner I watched some Sex & the City before headed to bed. I have been super tired lately, which may be due to the fact that I’ve unintentionally lowered my caffeine intake (iced coffee just hasn’t sounded that great lately! I know the insanity.)
This morning I woke up and had an oldie but goodie for breakfast. Two waffles, two PBs (dark chocolate on one, white chocolate on the other) plus banana and chia seeds on top, with an iced coffee on the side. Hopefully this gives me a little more energy throughout my day today!

Okay I admit it, I might have had a slight, small case of the Mondays at work today. What can I say, its hard to go back into work mode after having four days off, even with toe surgery. I comforted my ‘pain,” with an apple and a spoonful (or two) of peanut butter on the side (directly from the jar of course) as an afternoon snack. PB and apple may be one of my favorite combos. So good.

When 5 o’clock hit I was out the door and in my car with the AC-a-blowing. It was a hot one out there today! My original plan was to go home, take a nice walk and then head back to make dinner, but I decided to switch up my plan once I felt the heat take over my body when exiting the building.

Dinner was a easy one tonight. Boca burgers, roasted sweet potato “chips” and steamed broccolini on the side.

Original boca + sauteed onions, mushrooms, spinach, avocado, thin slice of pepper jack and a dab of yogurt based caesar dressing on a thin.

I’ve had those Boca Burgers in my freezer for way to long, so when I was making my dinner list for the week, I decided it was time to break them out! Just as good as I remember. 😀

After dinner, I strapped on my sneakers, which I haven’t done since the toe surgery, and headed out for a nice 45 minute walk. My goal was to make it 60, but my toe started feeling a little funny around minute 40 or so and I was pretty close to my house at the time so I decided to turn in for the night a few minutes early. Don’t want to push it too soon and mess up my nail again!

It felt a bit strange my toe being inside a shoe, but it had to happen sooner or later, and the walk felt good overall. It was still quite hot when I went out, but not as bad as it would have been if I had gone around 5:30. And truth be told, it was a beautiful night in the neighborhood.

Don’t sprinklers make you feel like a kid? They do to me, I just want to run through them when I see them with a big, smile plastered against my face. (I didn’t tonight for the record, but I wanted to.)

I’m still going back and forth with whether or not to get up early and do strength training or to do it when I get home tomorrow. We shall see. Its almost 11 already, but its such a nice feeling when I get my workout in before the day begins.

On a side note, in preparation for my grand return to running, I am thinking I need to purchase a good pair of running shoes that have better arch support than my current ones.

Le weekend.

My weekend, despite it being longer than normal due to my toe surgery, went by too quickly as usual. Let’s do a quick review, shall we?


1. Woke up, blogged, internet-ed and headed to Starbucks & Einstein Bagels for a quick breakfast for the roommate and me. She’s been so great from driving me to my surgery to wrapping my toe on a daily basis, I thought I’d treat her to breakfast on me. (Starbucks and bagels is a weekend tradition in this household!)

Ice soy skinny (2 pump) vanilla latte + bagel thin, asparagus, mushrooms, egg white and pepper jack cheese.


2. Headed to the pool to get some Vitamin D and a few rays. Read some of my book, The Non-Runner’s Marathon Guide for Women (Gotta keep myself motivated during these two weeks off, so I decided now was the perfect time to read the book to keep me pumped up!) So far, so good if you were wondering 🙂

3. Went on a short, 30-minute walk on the path near my apartment, to see how my toe would hold up. It was alright. Somewhat sore today. But glad I got to move a bit.

4. Showered, got dressed, headed to Ray’s Hell Burger (which is amazing, if you live in the DC area, go!, best burgers in town!) & then to a showing of Harry Potter (in 3D!) I loved the movie. I have read all the books, several times, and am not ashamed to call myself a huge fan. I went with a friend I’ve seen the last few movies with, so it was fun to chat about the movies afterwards over a beer at a bar nearby. I won’t ruin anything, but basically go see it. Now!

Turkey burger with sauteed onions, lettuce, & smoked mozzarella. Also had a few sweet potato fries on the side and maybe a beer or 2!


Overall, I had a pretty great Saturday if I do say so myself.


1.  Woke up, had an easy breakfast, read some blogs, internet-ed some more.

Whole wheat waffles, PB, chia seeds, and fruit salad on the side...

..until I threw some kiwi on top for fun!

2. A few hours at the pool, more reading, an easy lunch, more sun until some clouds scared me away.

Sandwich thin, cucumbers, hummus, spinach, turkey, pepper jack cheese (+ a few Baked Lays on the side.)

3. Grocery shopped till I dropped then came home, had a snack and attempted to re-install Windows on my laptop. It half worked. Going to bring it in to work tomorrow and see if one of my guy friends can take a look 🙂 Thankfully I have my work laptop at home so I am not computerless!

4. Cooked dinner, which took way longer than I suspected, and finally ate around 8:30pm! Thank goodness for my afternoon snack or I would have been dying! Also had a few bites of Neapolitan out of the container for a sweet fix.

Baked shells with turkey sausage, zuccini, mushrooms, onions, red pepper, onion, garlic stuffing + low-fat mozzarella & marinara on top. Salad on the side.

All in all it was a pretty good, laid back weekend, which is just what I needed with my toe not fully functioning yet. I hope this week to get some walks in and start a strength program since I can’t start running again until the doc says its okay, probably after my follow up appointment on the 28th. Wish me a speedy recovery! Hope no one has a case of the Mondays tomorrow…

Slept like a Baby.

It is a great, great morning over here at Broccolini & Cheese, because this girl slept like a baby last night! No mid night toe throbs, no shooting pain, no crying out of frustration and pain, nope none of that. I slept great! Thank goodness.

Needless to say, I am in such a better mood today! Still a little wobbly when walking, but I am hoping to go on a shortish walk later in some sandals, (no closed toed shoes yet.) I feel very stiff from sitting on the couch for the past two days, so I think a walk will loosen me up and make me feel a bit better.

Let’s talk last night first though. The roommate came home and said she felt like Chipotle for dinner. Having nothing in the fridge to make and not wanting take out, a wobbled my way there with her and got a chicken salad which we got to go.

Lettuce, chicken, black beans, cheese, pico de gallo, medium salsa, topped with some guacamole. I’m not going to lie, it was okay, I don’t mind Chipotle, but I never really got what the big deal was. Maybe it’s because I am from California, and there are burrito places as often as there are coffee shops…

I paired my fancy dinner with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc because after two days of pain, I deserved it.


We decided to rent Arthur which had a few good laughs in it but over all wasn’t so great. There are not that many great movies out on rental lately, what’s up with that? Bad summer TV plus limited rentals makes for a cranky Jane when she’s laid up on the couch! Thank goodness for Netflix!

I stayed up late watching more Samantha Who which I am almost done with. A little before bed, I knew I should take more Advil, so I had a small bowl of cereal (TJ Maple & Brown Sugar Shredded Wheat) with some milk so that I didn’t get a stomach ache from the meds.

This morning is such a gorgeous morning, so I am out on my balcony, enjoying an Arnold Palmer (mostly iced tea, and a splash of Chrystal Light Lemonade) while writing this post.

It’s getting warm, and I am craving coffee and breakfast so off I go! Happy Saturday!


I’ve been laid up pretty much all day. It was quite difficult sleeping last night because my toe hurt so badly. I even took a sleeping pill and it was hard to sleep, so today I have taken it really easy in hopes that tonight will be better. Cross your fingers for me.

Today’s eats have been repeats. Yesterday’s breakfast for breakfast, yesterday’s dinner for lunch, and a few small snacks here and there to make sure my stomach doesn’t get upset from all the Advil I am taking. (I have a pretty sensitive stomach when it comes to taking pills.)

I was so grateful today that I have had such a great distraction via this new, blogging community I have joined. I’m still new to it and I am still learning the ropes so to speak, but readying through people’s posts and seeing what they have overcome always puts a smile on my face.

I decided today to do a little upgrade and drop the ‘wordpress’ from my blog URL. So if you have subscribed in a reader make sure to update it, although I think that this blog is still linked to both since I did it all through WordPress. I am not that fancy yet, as you can probably imagine!

Off the top of your heads, is there anything else I need to do? Any suggestions are totally welcome 🙂

I also took away the bright colors. There were a bit bright for me. Something plain and simple now, but I have ideas for the future, if I can ever walk again 😉

Definitely staying in for the night, but tomorrow I have big plans to see Harry Potter (yes, I love it, do not judge!) Did I mention I am seeing it in 3D? I am that girl, and I don’t care! I don’t dress up though. But I do love seeing other’s costumes. Very fun!
